Historical Information
This photograph provides a fascinating view of East Street at a time when traditional horse-drawn transport was beginning to give way to the motor car. Looking east along the street, Fred Macey is seen with Jim Bucksey in front of Macey’s Forge, with a horse being attended to outside the forge. Further along the road, a horseless carriage carrying five passengers approaches the village centre, illustrating the arrival of motor transport in Hambledon. The photograph also records a street lamp and flag pole outside the Court House, features which help to establish the historic appearance of this part of East Street. Macey’s Forge stood opposite a terrace of four cottages which were later demolished in the 1950s to make way for Forge House.
