Historical Information
The garage and petrol station on East Street developed from Walter Poole’s hairdressing and cycle-agent business. In 1908 Walter Poole expanded the business into motor repairs and petrol sales while continuing to operate his barber’s shop. In 1933 he sold the business to Alfred B Greenwood, whose son Tom took it over in 1951. Tom continued the business until it closed in 1993. This photograph, taken around 1936, shows A.B. Greenwood outside the garage and petrol station shortly after he acquired the business. The image provides an early record of the development of motor-related services in Hambledon and the growing importance of the motor car in village life.
