Historical Information

This earlier view records High Street before the patterned brick building projecting at the corner was demolished. The building formed part of what is now Hilltop. The Red Lion public house is visible on the right, opposite Edney’s bakery and stores.

The photograph provides evidence of the changing appearance and commercial character of the street. Buildings that once accommodated pubs, bakeries and stores have subsequently changed use or disappeared, while the street itself retains many of its historic characteristics.
