Historical Information
Clarks, originally based in Droxford, purchased The Stores from Mr Doughty in 1946. By the 1960s the business operated a fleet of mobile shops and staff, illustrated by the vehicles and employees gathered outside the High Street premises in this photograph.
Mr Doughty’s two sons had both died during the Second World War. With no one to take over the business, he sold up and retired. Clarks subsequently moved its business into the People’s Market around 1969.
The photograph records the continuing commercial importance of High Street while also showing how village retailing was adapting through mobile shops and changing premises.
