Historical Information
High Street is an iconic feature of Hambledon and runs north-northwest from its junction with East Street, West Street and Speltham Hill. Looking north, the open view through the gate towards the Church of St Peter & St Paul and its commanding bell tower is a defining feature of the street.
High Street was the natural hub of the village and, like some other village streets, was wider than was necessary simply as a thoroughfare. Its width provided space for communal, trading and ceremonial activity. Although the precise road surface before metalling is uncertain, the edges of the street were cobbled with large, smooth flints, which remained in place into the present day.
The buildings along High Street include some of the oldest in the village. Over time they accommodated homes as well as businesses, workshops, butchers, bakers, an inn, a school and a working men’s institute.
