Historical Information
Looking south down High Street, the view is dominated by the broad frontage of the People’s Market, which stands on West Street. Until the early nineteenth century, this view would have been towards a much older building that subsequently fell into disrepair. The adjacent buildings to the west abutted another important structure, Manor Farm.
The George Inn stood at the crossroads corner opposite the Market. Together, the Market, George Inn and surrounding buildings illustrate the importance of this junction as an economic and political hub of the village.
High Street was also unusually broad for a village thoroughfare, providing space for communal, trading and ceremonial purposes.
