Historical Information
The photograph records High Street as an active commercial street around 1900. The church looks down over the scene, with Cutbath Butchers visible on the left. Mr Doughty, proprietor of The Stores at the south-east corner of High Street, is shown unloading a delivery cart into his bulk store.
A sign on the wall at the top of the street advertises The Olde Folly Pleasure Gardens, offering teas and light luncheons. The image therefore records several aspects of village commercial life at the turn of the twentieth century, from food retailing and deliveries to leisure and hospitality.
