Historical Information
The Court House is an important historic house on East Street and is Grade II listed. This postcard view dates from around 1905 and was published by Mrs H. Matthews of London House. The house is an 18th-century building with early and mid-19th-century extensions. Its name reflects its historic connection with the administration of justice, and secure cells survive in the basement. The small glazed structure projecting from the front ground-floor window was used for growing orchids, an unusual feature which provides an insight into the interests and activities associated with the house at the time.
