Historical Information
| Institutes were founded in communities across the country during the nineteenth century. The Club and Institute Union (CIU) was founded in 1862 and continues to exist, although there is no record as to whether the Hambledon Institute was part of that organisation.
The photograph dates from 22 June 1911, when the frontage was lavishly decorated for the Coronation of George V. The building had previously been the Red Lion public house. It is now a private residence known as Tower House. The image illustrates the changing social role of a prominent High Street building, from public house to institute and ultimately private residence. |
